Using Islami Bank ID Cards After Termination Raises Security Concerns

A faction of terminated officials and employees of Islami Bank PLC, originally recruited during the tenure of the S. Alam Group, staged a tense sit-in program in front of the bank’s head office in Motijheel on Monday, September 14 to demand their jobs back. The demonstration drew immediate friction as a counter-program was simultaneously organized at the same location under the banner of the Conscious Customers Forum, ultimately triggering clashes between the opposing groups. Following the confrontation, the protesting dismissed workers shifted their demonstration site and continued their protests directly in front of Bangladesh Bank.

Amidst these ongoing street demonstrations, fresh allegations have surfaced claiming that a majority of the dismissed personnel are still holding onto and continuing to use their old Islami Bank identification cards. When questioned about these allegations by journalists, several of the accused former officials became agitated and outright declined to make any official comments. This retention and alleged utilization of corporate credentials have brought severe scrutiny back onto the financial institution’s internal security protocols, administrative oversight, and overall identity management framework.

Banking sector analysts and central bank officials have strongly condemned the practice, emphasizing that holding an active corporate identity after an employment relationship ends is entirely unacceptable. Bangladesh Bank Executive Director and Spokesperson Mr. Arif Hossain Khan stated to the media that utilizing an ID card at any institution after dismissal is impossible and improper. ‘How can you use the identity card of an entity with which your relationship has been severed?’ he questioned, noting that this standard administrative rule applies universally across all organizations rather than just banks.

Similarly, an anonymous senior official from Islami Bank remarked that the continued possession and use of corporate ID cards pose a direct and serious security threat to the institution. The official stressed that dismissed individuals cannot retain these credentials and are formally expected to surrender them immediately upon the conclusion of their employment. Meanwhile, repeated phone calls and text messages sent to Islami Bank’s Acting Managing Director, Mr. Altaf Hossain, to secure an official comment on the matter went completely unanswered.

The formal termination of a worker’s employment immediately severs their legal ties, making the swift revocation of identification cards, electronic access passes, and digital system permissions a standard administrative requirement. In a financial institution like a bank, identity management is critically important because an ID card serves as official proof of affiliation. If unrevoked credentials remain in circulation, terminated individuals can potentially be misperceived as active bank officials by the general public, creating severe risks of customer confusion, unauthorized representation, and institutional reputational damage.

Experts note that while a clear legal and operational distinction exists between simply retaining an old badge and actively utilizing it to breach secure zones, the entire situation warrants an immediate and rigorous investigation. The bank’s Human Resources, Security, and IT departments must coordinate swiftly to retrieve unreturned cards, audit access control systems, and strictly monitor external communications. Comprehensive administrative and technical interventions remain vital to ensure that internal vulnerabilities are completely sealed and that corporate security is uncompromised.
