BJP Outraged Over Minister Rayareddi’s Remark On Islam
A significant political controversy has been sparked by senior Congress politician and Karnataka Higher Education Minister, Mr. Basvaraj Rayareddi’s public statement that Islam is superior to any other religion during a mass wedding function arranged by the Muslim community in Kuknur. According to Mr. Rayareddi, who has read the Holy Quran, Islam is a magnificent faith full of humanity that teaches proper living and is intended for everyone, not only Muslims. While emphasizing the need to follow Islamic principles, he also mentioned his own wish to travel to Mecca and acknowledged that he was aware of its entrance regulations.
The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) immediately and strongly criticized the statements, raising political tensions in the state only days after another minister resigned. Karnataka Leader of the Opposition, Mr. R. Ashoka, questioned Chief Minister Mr. D. K. Shivakumar about what he called the Congress government’s ‘anti-Hindu mindset’ and harshly criticized the ruling administration. Mr. Ashoka accused the cabinet minister of criticizing traditional math and temple visits while praising Islam, so disrespecting Sanatan Dharma and millions of followers.
The top BJP leader called on Mr. Basvaraj Rayareddi to publicly withdraw his controversial remarks and provide an unconditional apology to the Hindu community, demanding urgent accountability. Mr. Ashoka further cautioned Chief Minister Mr. D. K. Shivakumar to protect state security by immediately dismissing Mr. Rayareddi from the cabinet if the minister fails to comply. He questioned whether the statements were an attempt at vote-bank strategies or if they were consistent with the party’s stated belief in equal tolerance for all religions.
In an attempt to mitigate the growing political consequences and calls for his resignation, Mr. Rayareddi gave reporters a public explanation. He adamantly insisted that his remarks were never meant to insult, denigrate, or demean any other religious tradition. Mr. Rayareddi highlighted his personal regard by stating that he has visited and paid tribute at Kashi and several holy Jyotirlingas, emphasizing his wider viewpoint on faith and saying that all religions are superior in his view.
Following cabinet member Mr. B. Nagendra’s recent departure, the Karnataka administration is under a lot of political pressure, and this fresh incident comes at a very critical moment. Deep religious and political sensitivities exist in the state, as seen by the ongoing verbal spat between the opposition BJP and the incumbent Congress government.
