Consensus Before the New Delhi Summit: BRICS Bloc Agrees on Joint Declaration
Just ahead of the BRICS summit of developing economies in the Indian capital, New Delhi, member states have agreed on a joint declaration. Anonymous sources confirmed this to the international news agency Reuters in an interview.
The reconciliation initiative was primarily aimed at bridging the differences between long-standing bitter rivals Iran and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) amid the US war in the Middle East. According to analysts, one of the major challenges of the summit was crafting a message regarding the Middle East crisis that both Abu Dhabi and Tehran could accept.
However, foreign policy experts believe this joint statement will not bring about any immediate changes to the current global political landscape. Nevertheless, it will play a significant role in demonstrating the unity of developing nations against Western sanctions or decisions aimed at undermining their economies.
Earlier in May of this year, a joint declaration could not be released at the BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting held in New Delhi due to the friction between Iran and the UAE. Notably, following an Iranian missile attack, the UAE suspended all trade and financial transactions with Tehran last August. Overcoming prolonged diplomatic friction and deadlock, this consensus among the member states on a joint statement ahead of the summit is being viewed as a breakthrough.
