Case Filed Against Journalist For Mosque Demolition Reporting
An FIR and a formal complaint have been lodged against journalist Ms. Pooja Mathur in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, following her coverage of the controversial demolition of the historical 120-year-old Collectorate Mosque. The action stems from a social media post and a YouTube broadcast on ‘Red Chilli Live’ concerning the clearance of the site. According to Sub-Inspector Mr. Rajkumar Gautam, police flagged an X post from an account under Ms. Mathur’s name alleging that religious items, books, and an imam’s attire were swept away with the rubble. Additionally, Sub-Inspector Mr. Satyendra Kumar Sharma confirmed a separate case over a video’s title and content, though specific legal sections remain unspecified amid ongoing tensions surrounding the September 5 demolition.
Defending her reporting, Ms. Mathur stated she documented firsthand observations and local accounts, raising critical questions about administrative actions. Questioning the legal retaliation, she asked, ‘Is bringing out the truth a crime?’ She expressed respect for the judicial system while warning that penalizing journalists for doing their jobs endangers public accountability. ‘If a journalist has to pay the price for showing the truth and asking questions through an FIR, then who will voice the concerns of ordinary people?’ she asserted, highlighting the broader implications for democratic integrity.
