Grameenphone Launches Bangladesh’s Largest Data Center Solar Power Plant

Grameenphone, Bangladesh’s leading telecommunications service provider, has inaugurated a 325 kWp solar power plant at its Sylhet Data Center to expand renewable energy integration across its infrastructure. Executed in partnership with ZTE as the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction provider, the facility features 450 high-efficiency solar panels. This installation represents the largest solar energy project established at any data center in Bangladesh, marking a major milestone for the country’s digital ecosystem.
The newly commissioned solar plant is projected to generate over 300 MWh of electricity annually, successfully reducing carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 188 tons every year. By utilizing green energy for its data center operations, Grameenphone aims to minimize its environmental footprint while supporting growing digital connectivity demands. The initiative forms an integral part of the company’s broader sustainability roadmap to slash its total carbon emissions by 50% by 2030 against its 2019 baseline.
The facility was officially inaugurated by Grameenphone Chief Executive Officer Yasir Azman, alongside key leadership from Grameenphone and ZTE Bangladesh CEO Mao Junyong. Emphasizing the project’s strategic necessity during the ceremony, Mr. Azman remarked that building future-ready infrastructure must go hand in hand with environmental responsibility. He stated, ‘The solar plant at our Sylhet Data Center is a practical step in this journey, demonstrating how we can strengthen the digital infrastructure serving millions of customers while reducing our environmental impact.’
Extending support for the green initiative, ZTE Bangladesh CEO Mao Junyong commended the joint effort for establishing a new sustainability benchmark for the national telecom industry. He highlighted how advanced technology and renewable solutions combined to lower carbon emissions in line with Grameenphone’s goals. Mr. Junyong noted, ‘We believe this joint initiative will set a benchmark for the industry and contribute to building a greener, more sustainable digital future for Bangladesh,’ reaffirming their shared commitment to long-term environmental stewardship.
