India Needs 36–40 Fighter Jets Annually as IAF Chief Raises Concern Over Chinese Stealth Aircraft

India Faces Major Setback Amid Fighter Jet Shortage

Delays in inducting fighter aircraft have severely compromised India’s defense readiness, warned Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh. The retirement of the aging MiG-21 fleet has reduced the Indian Air Force’s operational strength to an alarming 29 squadrons, well below the sanctioned 42.5. To bridge this critical shortfall, Air Chief Marshal Singh stated that India must induct at least 36 to 40 modern fighter jets annually.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of the 94th Air Force Day and his upcoming retirement, Air Chief Marshal Singh remarked, “Technology delayed is technology denied. Delays beyond planned limits directly hit our capabilities.” Despite the reduced fleet size, he asserted that the air force remains formidable. To address the deficit, the IAF is relying on programs including the LCA Tejas Mk-1A, the proposed Mk-2, the Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA), and the indigenous fifth-generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). A deal with France for 114 Rafale jets is expected to be signed within the current fiscal year, while New Delhi has yet to decide on Russia’s offer for Su-57 stealth aircraft.
The Air Chief also expressed serious concern over Pakistan’s military modernization and Chinese military posture. Reports that Pakistan is acquiring J-35A fifth-generation stealth fighters from China and training its pilots there represent a “major cause for concern,” he noted.
Analysts observe that China’s export of its advanced stealth aircraft alters the regional air defense dynamics and puts significant pressure on India. Commenting on the “Make in India” initiative, Air Chief Marshal Singh stressed that while self-reliance is vital, national security cannot be compromised in its pursuit. He emphasized that while AI and drone technologies are increasingly important, advanced combat aircraft and integrated air defense remain essential to military power.
