PM’S Statement in Parliament on Phulbari Coal Extraction

To meet the nation’s growing energy needs and preserve foreign currency, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said in Parliament on Wednesday that the government is in discussions about extracting high-quality coal from Phulbari in Dinajpur. In response to a question posed by MP Sabiqun Nahar in the Jatiya Sangsad, he said that Phulbari coal is among the most valuable in the world and stressed that the country will greatly gain from utilizing this resource.

The PM assured parliamentarians that the interests and livelihoods of locals continue to be a primary priority while addressing concerns about the impact on the environment and society. He noted that the government will carefully examine full recovery plans to guarantee that people’s incomes are preserved and that they directly profit from the project, even though he stated that open-pit extraction would disturb nearby agricultural land and villages.

The PM emphasized at the end of his speech that environmental protection will be given top priority during the decision-making process. He reaffirmed the government’s dedication to the general welfare, saying that any proposed project would only proceed after carefully considering the country’s energy demands against ecological preservation and communal well-being.
