Ready to Prevent Any Subversive Activity Over Hasina’s Return: DB Chief

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Detective Branch (DB) chief Additional Police Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam has said no activities by the banned political party will be allowed. He said law enforcement agencies would deal firmly with any subversive activities in December or in connection with the possibility of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina returning to the country.

The DB chief made the remarks in response to questions from journalists at a press conference held at the DMP Media Centre on Wednesday (October 7).

Shafiqul Islam said no opportunity would be given to carry out any political activities that violate the law. In particular, ensuring the safety of the lives and property of residents of Dhaka Metropolitan City is one of the police’s primary responsibilities. He said law enforcement agencies remain alert in carrying out this responsibility and necessary measures would be taken to prevent any subversive activity.

Asked whether there were concerns over the possibility of Sheikh Hasina returning to the country in December and whether the banned party might organise any programmes, sabotage or disorder around her return, the DB chief said activities prohibited by law would not be allowed under any circumstances.

He said intelligence surveillance and legal measures were continuing to prevent any activities by the banned political party from being organised. Necessary steps would be taken depending on the situation, and the police remained firm on the matter.

The DB chief further said legal action was being taken against those involved in banned activities. Arrest operations were also continuing. If anyone attempts to organise, promote or conduct banned political activities in the capital, appropriate legal action will be taken against them.

Earlier, the DMP had strengthened intelligence surveillance at various times to prevent attempts by the banned political party to organise flash processions and rallies. Alerts have also been issued at various police stations across the capital to prevent leaders and activists of the banned party from organising and carrying out any programmes.

The DB chief said law enforcement agencies were deployed on the ground to maintain normal law and order and address potential risks to ensure the safety of city residents.
