Yemen’s Humanitarian Crisis Deepens as Over 250,000 People Displaced

More than 250,000 people have been displaced in war-torn Yemen as fighting has intensified in recent weeks, Chairman of the country’s Presidential Leadership Council Rashad al-Alimi has said, calling on the international community to take action.
In a video statement published by Al Jazeera Arabic, al-Alimi said escalating conflict in several parts of the country had pushed civilians into a severe humanitarian crisis. The Yemeni government has formally appealed to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) for urgent assistance to deliver humanitarian aid to conflict-affected areas, particularly the besieged city of Taiz.
Al-Alimi expressed regret that the Red Cross had yet to respond to the urgent appeal to ensure aid and essential services for people in besieged areas.
Years of civil war and renewed armed clashes have left Yemen facing severe shortages of food, clean water and medical care. With aid unable to reach the besieged city of Taiz, the lives of hundreds of thousands of civilians are at risk.
